Repair cafes offer a refreshing and sustainable alternative to consumer culture by fostering a community spirit and promoting environmental responsibility. These unique spaces provide a venue for individuals to bring broken or damaged items and receive help from skilled volunteers in fixing them, free of charge or for a donation to running costs.

There are many benefits of using and supporting repair cafes. Not only do they reduce waste but they conserve resources and help people save money. Additionally, they cultivate a sense of community as people come together to share skills and knowledge. South Hams are very lucky to have a vibrant network of repair cafes in Ashburton, Dartington, South Brent, Ivybridge, and Kingsbridge. Each of these cafes plays a vital role in supporting local sustainability efforts and encouraging a culture of repairing over discarding, reflecting the community's commitment to a greener future.

Here is a look at the Repair Cafes we have in South Hams.

Ashburton

Operating with 27 volunteers, Ashburton Repair Cafe has been going since 2018 and fixes around 100 items per month. That’s a lot of items diverted from landfill!

Ashburton Repair Cafe is located at Chuley Road workshop on Wednesdays between 3 pm - 5:30 pm and St Andrews Church Hall on Saturdays between 10 am - 12:30 pm.

You can find out more about their opening times and the items they can repair here

Dartington

A monthly Repair Cafe is held at The ReStore at the Cider Press Centre in Dartington on the last Saturday of every month between 10 am - 1 pm. You are invited to bring non-electrical household goods, tools, and furniture to learn how to repair them for a donation to running costs.

South Brent

The newly launched Repair Cafe is run by Sustainable South Brent and takes place on the second Saturday of the month, every 2 months in The Hall and Aune Room, South Brent Old School Community Centre.

For more information, please email repaircafe@ssb.org.uk.

Ivybridge

Ivybridge Repair Cafe is held in the Makers Mews classroom on the last Saturday of every month between 10 am - 12 pm. Visitors bring their broken items and work together with volunteer fixers to make repairs while enjoying a cuppa.

Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge Repair Cafe is hosted by Kingsbridge Climate Action at Kingsbridge Care Hub, Ilbert Road and is held on the last Sunday of every month between 10 am - 1 pm. There is a great Facebook group you can join to find out more about upcoming events and volunteering opportunities.
