The Force4Nature project connects local volunteer teams with exciting nature regeneration initiatives happening in their local community.
The project operates across the South Hams including South Dartmoor, currently visiting 16 different venues all of whom are doing nature regeneration work in some shape of form. The project works with private landowners, farmers, and other charities and trusts, wherever the need is best met.
The team have been investing in tools and equipment too so that they can turn up and get on with the work. They cover projects such as tree planting, putting up bird boxes, building leaky dams, pruning community orchards, prepping wild flower meadows, and a considerable amount of invasive species control such as Himalayan Balsam removal. For example the team have recently been at a smallholding near California Cross building planting beds to help establish an organic market garden business which will supply high quality seasonal produce to surrounding communities.
The team currently has 97 members on their F4N volunteer WhatsApp group and they receive between 8-16 volunteers per session, which is typically held on Wednesday each week.
Now 3 years in, the project is at a point where it could be rolled out to other Devon locations. The team will be exploring funding opportunities so that area managers can potentially be paid and groups properly equipped.
